Based on some novice users’ feedback about the absence of StuffIt Deluxe on their machines when StuffIt Expander was available, we wrote this small application that would make a copy of StuffIt Expander with the creator code of StuffIt Deluxe. This happens when a user has installed the freeware copies of StuffIt (DropStuff and StuffIt Expander), but doesn’t have the commercial software of StuffIt Deluxe on her system. On the Macintosh, files are labeled in a more sophisticated way at the operating system level as to what application should be launched instead of using the extension on the end of the file like on Microsoft Windows, which can be easily changed by a novice end-user. In the case that our users saw, the archive file we sent to them had a creator code of ‘SIT!’, which is the same as the creator code of StuffIt Deluxe. StuffIt Expander, instead, has a creator code of ‘SITx’, but can very easily perform the expansion of the file just as StuffIt Deluxe does. So, if you DO NOT have StuffIt Deluxe on your system, you can use this utility to get rid of the dialog asking you to choose StuffIt Expander. Since StuffIt Expander is what you really want, this saves you from having to select it. To use it, save the enclosure off where you keep your utilities on your system and just launch it. It will take care of everything for you. All that you will see is that the cursor will turn to a watch for a short period of time and the application will quit. After that, feel free to double-click on an archive file that would’ve originally asked you to choose StuffIt Expander. You will notice that you no longer see a dialog asking you to choose StuffIt Expander! Our utility creates a copy of StuffIt Expander in the same folder where the original is located with the name StuffIt Expander SIT!. Should you ever upgrade your copy of StuffIt Expander (their software does perform checks to see if a new version is available when you’re online), you should run this utility again after you upgrade in order to get the most recent code available.
